Materials needed for this
beginner's project:
- 6 straws, 6' of waxed string (dental floss works okay), scissors and a ruler.
Preparing the wheat for weaving (makes two figures):
- Prepare straws by trimming bottom of the straws just above the first joint (node)and slip off the leaves.
- Select 6 similar straws that are a least 13" long (not counting the seed heads).
- Cut off the seed heads about 1/2" below their bases.
- Soak these 6 straws in hot tap water for about an hour.
- If big end of straws crack when you try to bend them, let them soak longer.
Steps:
- After soaking them, cut each straw in half and trim all pieces to 6" lengths.
- Set aside half of the straws for a second figure but keep them warm and wet.
- Hold the straws in a bunch with the ends lined up and make a tight tie in the center (see Figure 6-1).
- Fold the figure in half at the center tie.
- Make another tie 3/8" from the fold to form the figure's head (see Figures 6-2).
- Separate the straws half to the front and half toward the back.
- Insert a 1" piece of straw (from the trimming) for the arms (see Figure 6-3).
- Make a tight tie 1/2" below the tie at the neck to lock in the arms and to form the waist (see Figure 6-4).
- Separate the straws again but this time half to the right and half to the left.
- Make a tie about 1/4" up from the ends of the legs leaving enough straw for feet (see Figure 6-5).
- Trim the excess straw to form feet (see Figure 6-5).
