This simple but intriguing figure costs only $8. Irish lore has it that St. Bridgid, as she sat beside her dying father, began weaving a cross, using fibers from the floor (rushes and rush matting were the floor covering of the time). Upon seeing the cross, her pagan father asked her to explain its meaning. He was so taken by her story that he became a Christian before his death. Many in Ireland still make the St. Bridgid's Cross today, and place it in their cottages and farm buildings on her feast day, February 1st, the day on which she died in 524 AD. They believe that the cross, along with their faith, will protect them and their animals from evil and want.
